Fisher Island's rich history begins with its acquisition by Carl Fisher from Dana Dorsey, South Florida's first African American millionaire. Fisher's vision for a grand seaport expansion faced challenges but eventually thrived, shaping the island's unique identity.
1905: Miami secured approval to carve through the barrier island, with its use designated for city purposes.
1917-1918: Dana A. Dorsey sold the island to Carl Fisher, igniting Fisher's vision for development.
1919: Carl Fisher's Alton Beach Realty purchased the island, sparking plans for a grand seaport.
1927: Fisher traded a portion of the island to William Kissam Vanderbilt II for his yacht, leading to the creation of "Alva Base."
1927-1926: Vanderbilt expanded the estate, constructing lavish amenities and the Mediterranean-style mansion.
1941: Completion of the main home and guest cottages, hosting prominent figures.
1944-1945: Vanderbilt passed away, and the estate changed hands multiple times, adding features like the Garwood Lounge.
1960-1968: Various uses including a quarantine station and a marine biology lab.
1979: Additional tracts sold, leading to a period of vacancy until development started in the 1980s.
